How to Bounce Back From Disappointment

Kickology.com recently did a post where it asked kicking, punting and snapping experts for their advice on how to "Forget and Move On" after a missed kick or bad snap.  There were a lot of great tidbits of advice.  I also was able to share a "Painful" memory from a high school experience.  I'd like to share it with you:  One, to let you know that this experience can happen to many people, and Two, because even us Kicking Instructors are Human, and most of us have experienced the highs and lows of many game experiences.  We have valuable experience to teach you to prepare you to hopefully not go through what we did, or to at least be able to bounce back quicker.  Here is my "Excerpt" from the Kickology Article with a little more detail.

Question: How do you bounce back and forget after disappointment?
"I feel that it takes some time to learn how to block out or move on from a bad play. Sometimes it may take a few game experiences to learn what it takes to move on quickly. My first biggest learning experience came my senior year of high school. In our semi-finals playoff game, I missed a field goal by a foot to the left going into half time. It was a tough break, but what hurt most was that we ended up losing the game by two points. For a while I felt terrible and felt responsible for ending our season. But some great teammates, coaches and family of mine made me realize that there were so many other factors that happened in the football game that directly effected the out come of the game, that the fault of the loss wasn't mine. A few less holding penalties and dropped balls would have given us a few more opportunities to score to change the outcome of the game.

By the time I was in college, it was easier to move on past a bad kick or punt. I had played in more games and experienced more game scenarios. In our position it can be tough because we only get a few opportunities and all the eyes are on you. But just remember that there are 40+ plays in every game that can also effect the outcome of the game and it's not all one person's fault, it's a team effort."
Read more expert advice from the "Remembering To Forget" columns.
Expanded:
Looking back at my football career, this is probably the most painful memory, but it was a "Great Experience" in the fact that it helped me grow mentally when it came to college football or even pursued the NFL, in terms of handling disappointment.  At the time, when the phrase "Football is Life, and The Rest is Just Details" was popular, made famous by clothing line in the late 90s, it seemed like it was the end of the world for me.  But in the end when you look at the big picture, Football is JUST a game, but a great experience at the same time.  A lot of great character building traits come from playing team sports.  It's a privilege to play the game, and even to play the game at a high level.  In the paraphrased words of Coach Brad Anderson of Wayzata "It's ok for it to hurt or strike some emotion.  It means that it meant something to you."  I think it's a perfect thing to remember.  Athletes give it their heart and soul to do their best and leave it all on the field.  For every winner, there is a loser.  Someone learns a great life lesson, and someone learns the hard way.  But it's all a great lesson for life or sports to learn how to handle the highs and lows of life, or how to the same or similar situation again in the future.  I wish you all good luck in all your future activities and upcoming seasons.  Feel free to share some of your experiences below.

Summer Football Kicking Camps

Hello Everyone!

I hope you all had a great Mothers Day Weekend.  I’m sending our updated Camps Schedule for May-July.  It is semi long, but it will explain all of our camps.

We will be offering a variety of camps in Minnesota:

1)  On June 23- We’ll be running a Kicking, Punting and Snapping camp at Benilde St Margarets.  It will be a 4 hour camp working with our team of instructors.  We’ll be working on basic fundamentals, advanced techniques and drills that your son can use and train with during the summer.  Camp is open to kids of all age and skill level.

2)  NCS (National Camp Series Evaluations & Camps) Events-  Right now I have 3 camps set up.  I will be setting up 1 fall event in October with details to come.

For those of you that are new to the "National Camp Series" camp idea,

Camp Dates
a.       June 2 at Stillwater High School
b.      June 24 at Rochester Community & Technical College (may be better for our students in Southern MN and Iowa areas
c.       July 7 & 8 at St Thomas University (2 day camp)

3)  July 7 & 8 (2 day camp at St Thomas University)- This will be turning into my Flagship Kicking, Punter and Snapping Camp.  Last year I teamed up with Tom Feely (National Renown Kicking Coach- FeelyKicking.com based out of Tampa, FL).  His son is Jay Feely with the Arizona Cardinals, and all of his kids were All American kickers and punters at different levels of football.  This year we are upping the Ante to offer a state of the art kicking camp.  It will be called the “Top Tier All American Kicking Camp & Tryout.”  We added Kick/Punt Returners into the mix.  We have added Former Packers NFL Special Teams (of 18 years) Coach Mike Stock to our team for this camp.  He will be giving a Special Teams Coaches Clinic to various High School and College Coaches in the area, but also offering instruction to Kick and Punt Returners.  But he has a vault of knowledge that he can offer your son of what he knows about all aspects of Special teams. All athletes will receive 2 days of instruction and will be given an NCS evaluation as well.  This is open to athletes of all skill levels.

There will be one Major Perk opportunity.  The top rated Kickers, Punters, Snappers and Returners from the camp have a chance to earn a spot on the All American Watch List.  There will be a set criteria to reach for Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors to reach their mark (standards will be posted soon).  The standards have been created based on 7 years of kicking data collected by NCS.  If you qualify, you will be put on this Watch List during your football season, and we’ll track your game stats. Based on how the seasons go, we’ll create a finalist list of the All American Specialist Honor from each class.  It’s an All American Watch List created by Specialists for Specialists.  We’ll be actively promoting the athletes on this list to all the Division 1, 2 & 3 programs across the United States.

College Athletes are welcome to attend, and you may register for the “Instruction Only” part of the camp.  We’ll have a website for this event, and it will be live within the week.  Right now it’s posted within the Camps Section on www.specialteamsfootballacademy.com

4)  July 28- I will be teaming up with Taylor Mehlhaff to run a PreSeason Kicking Camp at St Thomas Academy.  This camp will be designed as a Season Prep Camp for your upcoming season.  It’s available to athletes in High School, Middle School, College, and Free Agent athletes.  We encourage you to bring your Kicker, snapper, punter, and holder to attend too, to work as a unit before the season starts.

All Camp Registration can be found at http://www.specialteamsfootballacademy.com/camps.html

Football Kicking Testimonials

I have recently received a few Kicking Testimonials from some of the parents and athletes I train.  I'm really excited to share some of them with you.  Once I finished pursuing my NFL dream as a Punter and Kicking specialists, I wanted to get into coaching and give back to the kicking community.  The great feed back that I've received solidifies why I truly love giving Kicking Lessons and even Long Snapping Lessons.  I just love seeing athletes improve and watching them reach their personal goals.  I do also give thanks to our talented coaching staff that has support me over the years.  Meet our Coaches.

"Coach Husby has helped me make large strides this year as a punter. He has helped me learn the art of a successful punt through technique and attention to detail." -Nick Martin (Wayzata P/QB)

"Alexi was looking for a coach, and after discussions with several kickers and coaches in the Twin Cities, it was clear that working with Chris would be a tremendous opportunity for our son.  Alexi's kicking has become more accurate and more powerful since working with Chris.  This is due to his eye for detail and his ability to help kickers understand the mechanics behind kicking as well as the physical background behind being a top notch kicker.  His biggest improvements have been his accuracy and distance.  He was named All metro and All state in 2011. We give all that credit to Chris for helping our son." -Tim Johnson (Parent of Shakopee Kicker)

Video Kicking Testimonial
"I appreciate the "whole team approach" in training not simply the field goal kicker but also the snapper and the holder as well.  As a realtor, I understand the importance of surrounding oneself with competence in order to deliver a profitable closing. Chris does this in his field. He trains all the players with one common goal. This approach gets results." -J. Tacheny (Parent of Stillwater Kicker)

"My son is a soccer player interested in additional opportunities as a field goal kicker in high school.  Chris Husby's lessons, clinics and mentoring were exactly what he needed.  We have seen significant improvements in accuracy, consistency, and distance.  Chris has done an excellent job helping my son prepare for opportunities at the high school and potentially the college level later on.  Thanks Chris!" -Doug (Parent)

"Alex has learned so much from Coach Husby and his staff. We can not thank Chris and his staff enough for the impact they have had on Alex. Alex wishes the actual sport of Football was all year round. Thank you again for working with Alex during the off season."  - Ken and Chris (Parents of St Francis Long Snapper)

Thank you everyone for all of your support of what I do and even the work from our team!

Thank you.

High School Kicker Jon Coppens- 50 yard Field Goal

Today is a proud day for me as a kicking coach.  Heard great news from 3 of our student kickers.  First is Freshman Jon Coppens from Holy Family, kicked a 50 yard FG.  He's been working hard on his technique in the off season.  He's been attending our Winter Clinics this year, and doing various private training sessions with me and other kicking instructors.  Check out his kick.

Watch his kick here!
