MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Getting in the record books is the dream of any high athlete. And an Edina senior has a shot at breaking a near 30-year-old state record.
Patrick LeCorre has been the varsity since his freshman year.
“Four years of kicking and it’s just second nature,” LeCorre said. “Do what you got to do.”
It’s the attitude LeCorre has had since day one. And day one was his freshman year when he was called to kick on varsity — when opponents had 30 pounds on him on kickoffs.
“I was thinking, ‘If I have to tackle one of these guys, my is going to be really mad if I back away — but you might have to do it, though,'” he said.
But LeCorre has grown and developed into one of the top kickers in the state. Going into Thursday’s game against Wayzata, he had 22-career .
The record, held for nearly 30 years, is 27. It’s well within his reach.
Chris Husby of the Special Teams Football Academy thinks there’s a good chance LeCorre will set a new record by season’s end.
“He’s one of the top, kind of well-rounded specialists that I’ve had the chance to work with. He’s got a bright future ahead of him,” Husby said.
Distance seems to be LeCorre’s strength; his long is 48 yards. It’s a true advantage on Friday nights.
And there are other advantages to having a kicker like LeCorre in high school, such as having a leg up when it comes to field position.
“Last week against Minnetonka, they get six touchbacks. I mean, that’s fantastic,” said Edina coach Reed Boltmann. “For out defense, they got to go 80 yards to score.”
LeCorre hopes he’s kicking his way to a division one next year. In the meantime, he’s got his sights set on helping the Hornets win.
“Never set limits on yourself. I feel that if you really put your mind to something that you can do whatever you want to achieve,” LeCorre said. “With hard work, anything’s possible.”
He made another field goal in Thursday night’s , so he’s just four field goals from the record.
He has two more games plus the playoffs to try and break it.
